“What. The. Fuck. Is. Going. On?” Simon’s quiet seething surprised Ryan. He hadn’t heard the man sneak up on him at the grill, although it wasn’t surprising; he’d been so distracted by the taste of Krista still on his mouth, the feel of her soft little ass in his lap, wriggling against his cock.

“We should be ready to eat in about ten minutes, Sarge.” He was purposely obtuse, avoiding the obvious question.

He didn’t even get his usual enjoyment from seeing Simon’s grimace. Instead, he looked over his shoulder to see Gary deep in conversation with Zack.

“She told her parents we’re going out, that’s why she’s suddenly living here. We have to pretend we’re hopelessly in love, Sir. There’s nothing more to it. Scout’s honor.” He held up the three fingered salute solemnly. “I told you that the other day in the gym,” he offered weakly.

“If it were anybody else spewing the Scout bullshit, I’d deck them, but since it’s you, I’ll try to buy it. You just make sure you keep this professional. You look like a couple of horny teenagers, not a grown-ass couple going out. I don’t want this to get any messier than it already is, you hear me?”

Ryan nodded, gulping softly. He was having entirely too much fun pretending to be Krista’s boyfriend, and knew exactly what Simon meant about it getting messy.

He hadn’t had a girlfriend since before he enlisted. She hadn’t liked the long-distance thing, so she’d broken up with him two months into his first tour after cheating on him. It was fine with him, he didn’t mind much. Since then, he’d had women, but no girlfriends. It was simpler that way. No expectations to live up to, nobody to answer to.

Evan walked up to them, looking behind him to make sure no one was listening, and whispered, “We had a tail on the way here, but I lost them outside of town.”

“Motherfucker,” Simon grumbled. “Are you being watched?” he asked Evan.

“No, but I think that cop put a tracker on her phone. I found some stealth software on it, and it looks like the SIM card is damaged.”

“I don’t even fucking know what that means,” Simon muttered. “Christ.” He ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

“It means the cop knows where her phone is at all times, has her contacts, and likely has a bug on her line,” Evan supplied, entirely too chipper.

Ryan seethed. “So you led them here.” He was having a hard time controlling his voice. He wanted to yell curses at the clouds, but with the yard full of people, that wasn’t a good idea.

“I lost them. They just know Dripping Springs, not your exact location. I ditched the phone as soon as I realized what was happening.” He dropped a hand on Ryan’s shoulder. “Hey, man, you’re in the middle of nowhere here. They won’t find you.”

Unease slithered up his spine like a tingling presence he couldn’t ignore. He looked over at Krista, laughing with Jenna and Zack about something.
